Leon was trained as a Visual Arts teacher (Newcastle College of Advanced Education [now Newcastle University]) gaining a Bachelor of Education (Art) in 1985 and worked as a Visual Arts Teacher and Head Teacher from 1986 to 2001. From there he was appointed Deputy Principal and then Principal and retired at the end of 2021. He has also successfully completed a Master of Educational Leadership (University of New South Wales 2015). 

He is now focusing on his own creative repertoire after a career in education giving his students all his creative energy. Leon has an intense interest in recording the beauty within Australia in its many forms from landscape to studies of its flora and fauna, its people and at times delving into the imaginary and whimsical.
